Dave Macy was born in New York City in the shadow of Macy’s Department store and when he was four he and his family moved to New Jersey. He attended Catholic school (K through 12th grade) and even spent two years at a Jesuit University. You might think all that parochial schooling would have solidified him in his faith, but quite the opposite
occurred. He took a class on the Gospel of Mark when he was just 18. In that class were nuns, priests, and brothers along with a few lay teachers. Dave went into the course a skeptic, and emerged a full blown agnostic. (Although no one could have known it at the time, the teacher of that course was Dr. Dennis Duling, a Presbyterian minister who would later be part of The Jesus Seminar, a project of a group of liberal theologians who set out to cast doubt on the very words attributed to Jesus in the parables found in the Gospels.)Dave finished his college at the University of Georgia in Radio/TV/Communications, and spent the better part of the next 30 years as a radio talk show host in cities such as Atlanta, Toledo, and Nashville. It was during his first stint in Nashville ("Macy in the morning") on 1510 WLAC, that he began to uncover the truth of Jesus Christ through the reading of various apologetic authors. While his family life was spinning out of control Macy was being drawn into an understanding of the truth of the Bible. After years of struggle, and a head-on collision with a lamp post that totaled his truck, broke the steering wheel, and molded the windshield to the shape of his head, Dave walked away from the accident without a scratch. The crash caused him to hide in a hotel room for almost a week with not much more than a Gideon's Bible. It was during this time he finally came to the place where he knew that he was not in control of his life and never really could be. On a Saturday night he packed up and drove back home to seek forgiveness from his wife Angie. The next day he sought forgiveness at the altar and was born again. His hunger for seeing others who struggle with doubt and unbelief led him to consume more books on Christian apologetics. It was during this time, the first few years after becoming a Christian, when he realized that many “Christians” wrestle with questions about their faith. He classified them as being in one of three distinct groups: CINO (Christian In Name Only); BABBUT (Born Again Believer BUT- never growing in the faith); and BABBITS (Born Again Believer In The Spirit- walking in God’s word and with the Holy Spirit).Dave’s empathy for doubters led him to teach courses on Christian apologetics covering history, archaeology, science, and more. But his realization that many false converts are warming the pews of Christian churches, and many others are not living with the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit, caused him to write a book on the topic and to launch DoubtFreeLiving.com.Doubt Free Living is all about Living a Faith on Fire for the Lord! It’s about reassurance that God’s word is true. It’s about shaking off uncertainty by taking God at His word, and then putting that faith into action. Yes, it’s about being a bit of a Jesus Freak and not being ashamed to tell others. And Doubt Free Living is not just bold faith, but it is faith that shows itself in love.
Press Release on new book:
HENDERSONVILLE, TN, May 16, 2008 - Dave Macy, author of the book Doubt Free Living, has delivered what he calls a "gut check" dare to the Christian church. Appearing on the Harvest show (part of LeSea's World Harvest Television Network) Macy made it clear that there is a crisis in the American Christian church today of unparalleled urgency.
"The church is overflowing with CINOs (Christians in Name Only) who have no idea that they need to be born again," says Macy. "We have developed a message that is far different from the gospel of Jesus Christ and as a result, many who are deciding to become Christians are doing so for all the wrong reasons."
In his book Macy itemizes some of the attractions that draw people to church that have nothing to do with salvation. "People can be drawn to have a 'purpose' or a deeper meaning in their lives, or they may enjoy the coffee bar, the worship music, the drama, and all the trappings of 'seeker -friendly' churches, but they may never hear the reality of Hell and the of the need to be Born Again!,'" says Macy. "The fact is that there are thousands of priests and ministers who on any given Sunday will never talk about the need for repentance and salvation."
Macy is a former skeptic who became a Christian in 1997. His first book called Doubt Free Living is a collection of short essays and stories that center on the certainty of Christianity through the Bible, reason, and apologetics. The web site doubtfreeliving.com is full of Christian resources, a prayer request page, and even posts news stories from a Christian worldview. "People have told me it's a bit like Oswald Chambers on steroids," says Macy, "but I want the church to wake up and get back to the real message of Jesus Christ. Cool Christian websites, t-shirts, and those little fishes on your car don't make you a true believer—people need to examine just why they have taken the LORD's name to be sure they haven't done so in vain."
Doubt Free Living is a Chrsitian news and information website dedicated to helping believers strengthen their faith. It has many Apologetic resources, offers a prayer center, and a no cost newsletter to anyone who registers.
